A first taste of Winter this week. The gales did little harm at the Glasshouse although slightly more vulnerable when from the North. A few flakes of snow and more seasonable temperatures introduce us to the perils of Winter weather. The Savoys here at the Breckland Organics farm have been fleeced to protect from the sharp drop in temperatures. Brassicas subject to that howling Northerly will have felt the icy blast all the more since they have enjoyed unseasonably warm weather until now.
The ice reminds me that we lost a vehicle for several months after an accident on a slippery road last winter. Harvesting conditions are also more variable although both Breckland and Woodlands have good storage which can allow them more flexibility to allow for adverse forecasts. Even so maintaining continuity can be difficult with regard to both availability and transportation.
I’m sure the Winter months will present their challenges as usual. But the degree of them does seem to deepen as time goes by.
